Why Doesn't Obama Take More Of An Interest In Golf?

Why Doesn't Obama Take More Of An Interest In Golf?

I mean this seriously. He has played over a hundred rounds of golf since his swearing in. That's a lot of golf. Yet, he doesn't appear to be a fan of golf at all. This is odd for someone that plays as often as he does.

Bill Clinton was famous for his love of watching and attending PGA events. Buzz Patterson's book Dereliction of Duty describes some of this, ahem, passion.
I approached President Clinton on three occasions at this golf tournament, Roger, to ask him for the go-ahead to launch this attack. We had Air Force fighters in the air, ready to drop bombs and to repel Saddams forces, and on three occasions, President Clinton could not be bothered to take the phone call from Sandy Berger. So, on three occasions I approached the President, he brushed me offhe wanted to watch the golf tournament. So I saw, really, for the first time, the dereliction of duty, as it were, by President Clinton not being ablenot being willing to take the phone call while thousands and thousands of Kurds were being slaughtered by Saddam Hussein.
Both Bushes were big golf fans as well. As I watch the Ryder Cup this weekend, I am reminded of this story:
Entering the final day, the Americans were four points down, a huge margin to make up. But they had been given a pep talk by the then Governor of Texas, George W Bush, who had read out the no surrender address from the Battle of the Alamo. It was so belligerent that David Duval stormed out of the locker room shouting, Lets go out and kill them. The Americans duly staged an almighty comeback and it all came down to the 17th green. The US player Justin Leonard nailed a monster 45ft putt, which prompted his team-mates, their wives and caddies to rush on to the green and high-five each other, dressed in their ludicrous maroon uniforms that made them look like they worked at a cut-price pizza joint. They had forgotten that Jos Maria Olazbal, the Spaniard, had yet to finish his game. Olazbal, looking flustered, missed his putt and America won the Ryder Cup.
Talk to any of your friends or family that golf frequently, and I can assure you they are watching or paying attention to the Ryder Cup. This is hardly some game-changing issue. It's just... very odd. Posted by: JohnE. at 11:38 AM

US poised to add more points to big 8-4 lead

MEDINAH, Ill. (AP) ? This Ryder Cup is turning into a rout.

After taking a commanding 8-4 lead with a near-sweep Saturday morning in the foursomes, the Americans didn't even give Europe a chance to recover before starting the next romp. The U.S. had the lead in all but one of the fourball matches, with Webb Simpson and Bubba Watson leading the way at 4 up through 13 holes over Justin Rose and Francesco Molinari.

Only Steve Stricker and Tiger Woods were missing out on the fun ? again ? down 4 to Sergio Garcia and Luke Donald at the turn.

The Americans need 14 1/2 points to regain the Ryder Cup. The largest comeback in Ryder Cup history was at Brookline in 1999, when the U.S. erased a 10-6 deficit on the final day.

"I keep telling the guys we're not even halfway over with this tournament so far," captain Davis Love III said after the morning matches. "There's a lot of points left, let's keep doing what we're doing. They're buying into it, they're playing great."

Turning Medinah Country Club into a big lovefest, too. Roars of "U-S-A! U-S-A!" echoed throughout the sun-kissed course, and the U.S. point total changes so often fans are going to have whiplash from checking the scoreboards.

And this is with Keegan Bradley and Phil Mickelson sitting out the afternoon matches.

Bradley and Mickelson kick-started the Americans' big day in record-tying fashion, thrashing Lee Westwood and Luke Donald 7 and 6. The two are on such a roll they didn't even have to putt to win their first two holes. The Europeans conceded No. 1 when Mickelson put his second within 2 feet of the pin, and they gave the Americans No. 2 after Westwood put his tee shot in the water and missed the bogey putt.

Mickelson's gorgeous wedge set up Bradley with an 8-footer for birdie on No. 4, and he knocked it in easily, letting out a roar when the ball dropped into the cup. The Americans went 6 up when Donald had another putt lip out on 10, and the Europeans might as well have conceded then, the result was so inevitable.

Sure enough, two holes later, Mickelson played a perfect wedge from the rough, hitting the green about 20 feet left of the pin and trickling down a slope within a foot of the cup.

"Phil is a good partner to Keegan," Donald said. "He's obviously been a rock star this week, and they did nothing wrong."

The 7-and-6 win, in fact, matched the mark for most lopsided score in an 18-hole team match. Two other teams have won 7 and 6, both foursomes, with Paul Azinger and Mark O'Meara in 1991 the last to do it.

The victory made Bradley the first U.S. rookie to start 3-0 since Loren Roberts in 1995. And it handed Donald his second straight loss in foursomes after going unbeaten in his first six matches.

The U.S. got another big boost in the final match, Jim Furyk and Brandt Snedeker's 1-up victory over Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell.

The Northern Irish duo are considered Europe's top team, the No. 1 player in the world and the guy who delivered the winning point for Europe two years ago at Celtic Manor. But they've looked almost ordinary since Furyk and Snedeker forced them to grind out a victory in Friday's foursomes, and they couldn't overcome their slow start Saturday.

"We were just parring the place to death, which is not good enough in this format," McDowell said. "We just couldn't get the ball to go in the hole. Rory had a few putts in particular that burned some edges, and we just couldn't get any momentum going."

Take the last three holes. A nice iron by McDowell gave McIlroy an easy birdie putt on 16, and he made it to pare Furyk and Snedeker's lead to 1 up. But McIlroy followed that with a miss on a 15-footer that would have evened the match on 17.

McIlroy's monster drive on 18 put the Europeans in good position to scratch out a halve ? especially after Snedeker went in a bunker off the tee. But McDowell flew the green on the second shot, leaving McIlroy with a long putt from the fringe. He nearly made it, but his line was about a half-inch too far to the right and McIlroy groaned as he watched it roll on by.

When Snedeker got a 25-footer to about a foot, the Europeans conceded.

"We are in a hole," McDowell said. "These guys, there's blood in the water and they're up for it. They've got a head of steam up and we've got to try and stop it."

UNITED NATIONS (AP) ? Myanmar's president Thursday said his country has taken irreversible steps toward democracy and paid unprecedented public tribute to opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

President Thein Sein told the U.N. General Assembly that the country also known as Burma is leaving behind five decades of authoritarian rule.

It was a speech that reflected the momentous changes in Myanmar over the past year, as Suu Kyi has been elected to parliament after 15 years of house arrest, and the country has shed its pariah status.

For the first time, Myanmar's speech to the U.N.'s annual gathering of world leaders was broadcast live on state television at home. Never before had such a speech even mentioned the opposition leader, whose peaceful struggle against military rule won international admiration but only the ire of the former junta.

While former general Thein Sein has orchestrated Myanmar's political opening, he has not publicly praised Suu Kyi before, nor referred to her as "Nobel laureate" as he did Thursday.

"As a Myanmar citizen, I would like to congratulate her for the honors she has received in this country in recognition of her efforts for democracy," Thein Sein said.

Suu Kyi is currently visiting America, and last week met President Barack Obama and was presented with Congress' highest award. She attended a meeting on global education on the sidelines of the General Assembly Wednesday.

The Obama administration has been anxious that her visit should not overshadow Thein Sein's. He still faces opposition with the military to the political reforms.

Thein Sein met Wednesday with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, who announced the easing of a ban on imports from Myanmar ? the main plank of the remaining U.S. sanctions on the country ? to reward its progress toward democracy.

The Myanmar leader said in his speech that the country has seen "amazing changes." He said Myanmar ? including its armed forces ? "have been taking tangible irreversible steps in the democratic transition and reforms process." He said it has left behind centralized authoritarian rule, and now has a viable parliament with checks and balances. He said the government has reached cease-fires with 10 ethnic armed groups and would hold national-level negotiations to reach a final peace agreement to completely end hostilities.

Experts on Myanmar stay that while the new legislature is energetic, it remains dominated by pro-military parties. Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy, which won 1990 elections but was barred from power, still has only a tiny portion of the seats, which it won in special elections in April.

Also, ethnic fighting persists, and has escalated in the past year between Myanmar's military and the Kachin group in the country's north, which has led many to question the military's willingness to reach peace.

Mars rover Curiosity finds signs of ancient stream

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The NASA rover Curiosity has beamed back pictures of bedrock that suggest a fast-moving stream, possibly waist-deep, once flowed on Mars ? a find that the mission's chief scientist called exciting.

There have been previous signs that water existed on the red planet long ago, but the images released Thursday showing pebbles rounded off, likely by water, offered the most convincing evidence so far of an ancient streambed.

There was "a vigorous flow on the surface of Mars," said chief scientist John Grotzinger of the California Institute of Technology. "We're really excited about this."

The discovery did not come as a complete surprise. NASA decided to plunk Curiosity down inside Gale Crater near the Martian equator because photos from space hinted that the spot possessed a watery past. The six-wheeled rover safely landed Aug. 5 after a nail-biting plunge through the Martian atmosphere. It's on a two-year, $2.5 billion mission to study whether the Martian environment could have been favorable for microbial life.

Present day Mars is a frozen desert with no hint of water on its radiation-scarred surface, but geological studies of rocks by previous missions suggest the planet was warmer and wetter once upon a time.

The latest evidence came from photos that Curiosity took revealing rounded pebbles and gravel ? a sign that the rocks were transported long distances by water and smoothed out.

The size of the rocks ? ranging from a sand grain to a golf ball ? indicates that they could not have been carried by wind, said mission scientist Rebecca Williams of the Planetary Science Institute in Tucson, Ariz.

Though Curiosity did not use its high-tech instruments to drill into the rocks or analyze their chemical makeup, Grotzinger said scientists were sure that water played a role based on just studying the pictures.

It's unclear how long the water persisted on the surface, but it easily could have lasted "thousands to millions of years," said mission scientist Bill Dietrich of the University of California, Berkeley.

Curiosity chanced upon the dried-up streambed while driving to Glenelg, an intriguing spot where three types of terrain meet. Its ultimate destination is Mount Sharp, a mountain rising from the center of crater floor, but it was not expected to travel there until the end of the year.

Finding past water is a first step toward learning whether the environment could have supported microbes. Scientists generally agree that besides water and an energy source such as the sun, organic carbon is a necessary prerequisite for life.

While an ancient streambed holds promise as a potentially habitable environment, scientists don't think it's a good place to preserve the carbon building blocks of life. That's why the rover will continue its trek to the foothills of Mount Sharp where there's a better chance of finding organics.

Hearing brains are 'deaf' to disappearance of sounds, study reveals

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? Our brains are better at hearing new and approaching sounds than detecting when a sound disappears, according to a study published September 27 funded by the Wellcome Trust. The findings could explain why parents often fail to notice the sudden quiet from the playroom that usually accompanies the onset of mischief.

Hearing plays an important role as an early warning system to rapidly direct our attention to new events. Indeed we often rely on sounds to alert us to things that are happening around us before we see them, for example somebody walking into the room while our back is turned to the door. Yet little is known about how our brains make sense of the sounds happening around us and what makes us hear certain events while completely missing others.

Researchers at the UCL Ear Institute wanted to try and understand what makes certain sounds easily detectable while others go unnoticed. They created artificial 'soundscapes' composed of different on-going sounds and asked listeners to detect the onset or disappearance of different sound-objects within the melee.

Overall, the team found that listeners are remarkably tuned to detecting new sounds around them but are much less able to detect when a sound disappears. In busy sound environments, the participants missed more than half of the changes occurring around them and the changes that were detected involved much longer reaction times. The effects were observed even in relatively simple soundscapes and didn't seem to be affected by volume.

Dr Maria Chait, who led the research at the UCL Ear Institute, said: "On the one hand, we might expect to be more sensitive to the appearance of new events. In terms of survival, it is clearly much more important to detect the arrival of a predator than one that has just disappeared. But this reasoning doesn't apply to other situations. Imagine walking in a forest with your friend behind you and suddenly having the sound of their footsteps disappear. Our results demonstrate that there are a large number of potentially urgent events to which we are fundamentally not sensitive. We refer to this phenomenon as 'disappearance blindness'"

The study also explored how resilient listeners are to scene interruptions. In busy scenes, such as those we often face in the world around us, important scene changes frequently coincide in time with other events. The study showed that even brief interruptions, such as a short 'beep' occurring at the same time as the change, are sufficient to make listeners fail to notice larger scene changes. It is thought that this occurs because the interruption briefly captures our attention and prevents the information about the change from reaching our consciousness.

"Understanding what makes certain events pop out and grab attention while others pass by un-noticed is important not only for understanding how we perceive the world but also has important practical applications. For example, to aid the design of devices intended to help professionals such as air traffic controllers and pilots who operate in environments where the detection of change is critical," added Dr Chait.

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Women who underwent genital cutting as young girls may be at increased risk of physical, sexual or emotional abuse from their husband, a study of women in Mali suggests. The study, of nearly 7,900 women, found that 22 percent of those with genital mutilation said they'd been physically abused by a husband or male partner. That compared with 12 percent of women who'd never been subjected to the procedure. It's estimated that more than 130 million women worldwide have undergone genital mutilation, also known as female "circumcision. ...

Cops: Carjacker drives pregnant girlfriend to hospital

Volusia County Corrections via NBC Miami

By NBC News staff

A central Florida man carjacked a driver in a desperate attempt to get his pregnant girlfriend to the hospital, the Volusia County Sheriff?s Office said Monday.

Robert Boudreaux, 31, of Deltona allegedly walked into the path of a car to force it to stop, and threatened to shoot the driver if he didn't give him and his 22-year-old girlfriend a ride. He later forced the driver out at a red light, the sheriff?s office said in a statement, and got behind the wheel.

For more visit NBCMiami.com

The couple's saga started when the girlfriend's car ran out of gas in DeLand, she told police. A friend picked them up and dropped them off in the town of Deltona, only a few miles away. The couple then walked for several miles, and the woman started to feel dehydrated and began to bleed, the sheriff's office said. Volusia County Sheriff's Office Spokesman Brandon Haught told NBC News that police did not know where the couple was going.

Around noon, Boudreaux tried unsuccessfully to flag down cars on North Normandy Boulevard, the sheriff's office said. When that failed, Boudreaux allegedly turned to carjacking.

When the vehicle's 20-year-old driver stopped at a red light at the intersection of North Normandy and Elkcam Boulevards, ?Boudreaux again got angry and ordered the driver to run the light,? the sheriff?s office said. ?The driver refused and Boudreaux grabbed the driver?s seat belt, using it to force him back against the seat while Boudreaux yelled that he would shoot the driver if he didn?t get out.?

The man got out of his car and Boudreaux drove off, while the man called 911. The driver told police he never actually saw a gun, the sheriff?s office added.

Deputies quickly spotted the car. They said Boudreaux used a turning lane to pass other vehicles and erratically shifted between lanes as he refused to stop.

Even after he pulled into the parking lot of Florida Hospital Fish Memorial in Orange City, Boudreaux continued to evade authorities until the car he was driving was trapped by patrol cars, the sheriff?s office said.

He was taken into custody and faces charges of armed carjacking, fleeing or eluding and driving with a suspended license, according to the sheriff?s office. It was not immediately clear whether he has an attorney.

Deputies took the girlfriend to the hospital?s emergency room, where she was treated for heat exhaustion and later released. She told them she tried to get Boudreaux to stop and does not face any charges, the sheriff?s office said.

Are there any fighters who can beat Jon Jones?

Jon Jones' win on Saturday night was awe-inspiring. He survived a grotesque armbar, and came back to win with fourth-round submission. He seems to keep getting better and better with each fight, this time incorporating jiu-jitsu skills into his win. At the moment, he appears unbeatable.

Are there any fighters in the UFC who can eventually take him on and win? Any fighters who can take time to study Jones, figure out his every move, and then finally solve the Jon Jones puzzle?

Dan Henderson: The one-time PRIDE and Strikeforce champion was supposed to fight Jones before he was injured and UFC 151 was canceled. He has already put in the time and effort to fight Jones, and may already have him figured out. His age is an issue, but Henderson still wants the fight.

Alexander Gustaffson: One of Jones' biggest advantages is his reach. He was able to hold Belfort at bay throughout the fight by simply extending his arm. At 6-foot-5, Gustafsson is an inch taller. He has a fight lined up with former champ Mauricio "Shogun" Rua who will show if "The Viking" is ready for the next step.

Chael Sonnen: Based on Sonnen's inability to handle Anderson Silva in their last fight, there is no reason to believe Sonnen could beat Jones. However, the run-up to the fight would be so much fun. Considering the UFC put Jones up against a middleweight who lost a title shot, integrity of the belt doesn't matter as much as entertainment or making money. Sonnen has already shown he can get under Jones' skin in a way no one else has, and that just may give him the edge in a bout.

Anderson Silva: Could he beat Jones? Yes. Will this fight ever, ever happen? No. Silva keeps talking about wanting a fight with welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre, and he does have a few challenges waiting for him at middleweight.

Who is missing from this list? Speak up in the comments, on Facebook or Twitter.

University of Michigan study

ANN ARBOR, Mich.In the first study to detail the health of Pacific Islanders living in the United States, University of Michigan researchers have found alarmingly high rates of obesity and smoking.

The preliminary findings are being presented today (Sept. 24) at a conference in Los Angeles on health disparities among Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders.

"Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders are the second fastest growing minority population in the U.S.," said Sela Panapasa, a researcher at the U-M Institute for Social Research and principal investigator of the Pacific Islander Health Study. "But they are often underrepresented in national surveys.

"This is the first scientific study to assess the health, well-being and health care use of two subgroups of this important populationSamoans and Tongans. Our hope is that this will lead to the development of evidence-based interventions and policies to improve the health of these groups, and also serve as a model for similar studies of other subgroups of this population."

For the study, the research team interviewed a random sample of 239 California households in 2011 and 2012. Half were Tongans living in the San Mateo area and half were Samoans living in the Los Angeles area. Trained Samoan and Tongan interviewers collected information on a wide range of health conditions and health behaviors among adults and adolescents in the households.

Among the key preliminary findings:

  • Smoking rates among Pacific Islanders were three to four times higher than for other Californians, and more than twice as high as in the U.S. overall. About 46 percent of Pacific Islander adults said they were current smokers, compared to 13 percent of all California adults and 20 percent of U.S. adults. Among Pacific Islander adolescents, 23 percent said they had tried smoking cigarettes, compared to just 3.5 percent of California teens.
  • More than half of Pacific Islander adolescents were overweight or obese based on their body mass index. More than 80 percent of Pacific Islander adults had a BMI that indicated they were overweight or obese.
  • Pacific Islander adults were much less likely than other adults to see a dentist (47 percent, compared to 86 percent of all Californians), and Pacific Islander women were less likely to have ever gotten a mammogram (53 percent, compared to 73 percent of Californians).
  • Pacific Islander adults age 50 and older were much less likely to have ever had a colonoscopy (31 percent, compared to 78 percent of Californians). Only 24 percent of Pacific Islander women ever had a colonoscopy, compared to 79 percent of California women.
  • Pacific Islander teens were much more likely than other adolescents to engage in risky behaviors such as drinking alcohol and smoking marijuana. For example, nearly 47 percent of Tongan teens surveyed admitted to trying alcohol, compared to 36 percent of California teens overall. And 25 percent of Pacific Islander teens had tried any drug, compared to just 14 percent of California teens overall.

"By identifying the problem areas facing specific Pacific Islander communities, we can finally begin to chart a course to develop interventions that will help to reduce these health disparities and build healthy communities," Panapasa said.

###

Among Panapasa's collaborators on the study are U-M researchers James Jackson, Cleopatra Caldwell, Steven Heeringa, and James McNally, and Harvard University researcher David Williams.

Funding for the Pacific Islander Health Study was provided by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health, the Asian Pacific Islander American Health Forum and the W. K. Kellogg Foundation.

Russia's Medvedev plays 'good cop' on Pussy Riot

Russia's Dmitri?Medvedev called for the release of three Pussy Riot members sentenced to two years in prison. Is he trying to distance himself from the decreasingly popular president?

Dmitri Medvedev, Russia's prime minister and former president, has departed from the official script ? as he sometimes dramatically does ? to call for the release of three Pussy Riot women who were sentenced last month to two years in a penal colony for committing sacrilege in Moscow's premier Orthodox cathedral.

The women have been in prison since March, and their appeal hearing is set to begin in two weeks. Mr. Medvedev called for the women to be given suspended sentences.

"Imprisonment is a very severe, even frightening responsibility," Medvedev told a meeting of the pro-Kremlin United Russia party, of which he is nominal leader.

"This well-known group of girls have been in prison quite a long time already, and that is a very serious punishment for everything they did, regardless of the sentence?. Prolonging their prison confinement seems unproductive in this case," he added.

Medvedev's comments came just a few days after President Vladimir Putin compared Pussy Riot performances with "witches' sabbaths" and mused over how obscene their name sounds in English in an interview with the Kremlin-run RT network. Otherwise, Mr. Putin insisted he had nothing to do with the case.

On Tuesday Russian state TV aired a "documentary" film entitled "Provocateurs. Part 2" which claimed the brief "punk prayer" performed by Pussy Riot in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior last February was part of an international conspiracy financed by renegade Russian oligarch Boris Berezovsky, who currently lives in London.

Some experts say Medvedev, who has not shone in his new role as prime minister, may be trying to refurbish his liberal credentials amid Russia's fast polarizing political landscape in hopes that he may have a political future if Putin should be forced to leave the Kremlin early.

"Medvedev can't change anything for Pussy Riot, but he's taking care to position himself as a liberal," says Alexei Mukhin, director of the independent Center for Political Information in Moscow.

"After all, he's a former president, head of the United Russia party, and if Putin were to go away he could step up. He's taking care with his biography, to show that he can take a stand."

The Weinstein Company Acquires Lee Daniels' "The Butler"

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - The Weinstein Company has acquired domestic distribution rights to "The Butler," Lee Daniels' upcoming film about a black man who served as a butler for eight different presidents, the studio announced on Monday.

Oscar nominee Forest Whitaker stars as the butler, who worked in the White House for more than 30 years under presidents such as Dwight Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon.

The tale first surfaced in a Washington Post article, which Danny Strong and Daniels adapted for the screen. Daniels is shooting the film in New Orleans, and the Weinsteins bought the project based off its script and cast.

"Lee tells stories in a way no one else does," TWC co-chairman Harvey Weinstein said in a statement, "What struck me most about this story is the perspective it comes from, which in this case is the butler - a man who was a fly on the wall for decades in the world's most powerful home. It takes an unbelievable cast like the one that's in place to do this story justice, and we are proud to be given the chance to share this story with the world."

The film marks Daniels' next film after "The Paperboy," a campy southern gothic tale which debuted at Cannes and was received with a mix of astonishment and horror.

"The Butler" boasts an all-star cast that boasts not just Whitaker but also Oprah Winfrey, Mariah Carey, John Cusack, Jane Fonda, Melissa Leo, James Marsden, Vanessa Redgrave, Alan Rickman, Robin Williams and Liev Schreiber.

Pamela Oas Williams, Buddy Patrick, Cassian Elwes and the late Laura Ziskin are producing the project for Ziskin's eponymous company.

"What moves me most about this man is his quiet nature, grace and unmatched perspective that comes from being in one place - a very powerful one - during what was arguably the period in American history that saw the most change," Daniels said in a statement.

The film marks Daniels' first project following "The Paperboy."

iMore Editors' Choice for September 23, 2012

Every week, the editors at iMore carefully select some of our favorite, most useful, most extraordinary apps, accessories, gadgets, and websites. This week's selections include a fun golfing game for the iPad, an old favorite Twitter app on the iPhone 5, an alternative to YouTube, and an app for finding wallpapers for your iPhone 5.

Wonderputt for iPad - SimonSage

So you didn't get an iPhone 5. That's fine, you still have your trusty iPad, right? Well, this really great mini-putt game came out last week called Wonderputt. It crams a whole 18 holes onto the same single screen, but as you'll quickly discover the course's surreal landscape continually shifts in bizarre and imaginative new ways. The controls are dead simple. All you have to do is drag a line behind your ball, with the length determining strength, and your finger's relative position altering the angle. Players are scored in traditional golfy fashion, with par, birdies, eagles, and the whole shebang. Scores are shared to online leaderboards on Game Center, and meticulous stats are saved on your how many shots you take and how long you take. There are collectibles hidden throughout the course, which are sure to bring you back for more. The graphics are Retina-ready and extremely well-done, and the soft sountrack will make you continually feel like you're in outer space.

Overall, Wonderputt is a charming, sharp, otherworldly experience. Definitely try it out.

Tweetbot for iPhone - Chris

This week, my pick is one that has been chosen before but I want to make it this weeks pick as it has just has received a new update that makes it extra awesome. Yes, Tweetbot now supports the iPhone 5 and its larger 4-inch screen and this apps shows you why that extra screen real estate is so important.

Tweetbot is quite simply the most elegant and functional Twitter app available for iPhone in my opionion and it is a real pleasure to use it. It makes me smile each and every time I hear the well chosen sounds and use the screen switching gestures; it is so intuitive. Tweetbot handles multiple timelines, smart gestures, push notifications, mute filters and much more.

The Tweetbot developers were right on the ball with updating Tweetbot and had iOS 6 and iPhone 5 support built into the app the day before iOS 6 launched and well in advance of the iPhone 5 release. Looking at this awesome app on the iPhone 5 big screen is so much nicer now, that screen was made for apps like this.

If you use Twitter and want an app that works better than any other and also makes you happy using it, make sure you get Tweetbot. Its my most used and favourite app on my iPhone 5!

Jasmine - Bla1ze

With the release of iOS 6 we saw Apple and YouTube sever ties and take out the YouTube.app. Google has made their official YouTube app available for download but for those of you out there who don't really like that one, there is a new option out there. Jasmine is now available for download and it looks rather fabulous. It's minimalistic in looks and big on function. All the things you'd expect from YouTube are built in such as comments, favourites, playlists and more but you also get the added benefit themes and filtering for notorious spam channels and such. Overall, it's pretty awesome and way better than the Google version plus, it's ready for the iPhone 5. With Jasmine installed, I've now uninstalled the official Google YouTube app.

Retina Wallpapers & Backgrounds

One of the first things I wanted to do once I had my beautiful new iPhone 5 in my hands was go on a hunt for the perfect wallpaper for my home screen. Most of the wallpaper apps out there don't yet offer support for the iPhone 5, but Retina Wallpapers & Backgrounds does! Retina Wallpapers & Backgrounds lets you sort wallpapers by category, download them to your Camera Roll, mark as favorites, and includes a lot of wallpapers for free. If you have an iPhone 5, check this one out!

Your choice?

Now that we've chosen our favorites for the week, we want to hear yours! Did you pick up a killer app, accessory, or game this week? Let us know in the comments below!

Ooh, this is interesting ^^ A couple quick questions. Is there any specific character skeleton you want us to use, or can we create our own? Also, what creatures are availible to roleplay; is there a specific list you want us to chose from or can we just chose from any sort of creature?

A mouse in the house? Tips for finding a qualified pest professional ...

Saving a few bucks on do-it-yourself pest control isn?t worth the risks to your health and property, so call an expert.

(NewsUSA) ? Have you grown accustomed to the sight of gnawed-on package corners, bread crumb trails or mouse droppings? Are your Frosted Flakes littered with meal moth wings and larvae? Have you noticed several connect-the-dot piles of sawdust from hungry termites or beetles?

If you answered yes to any of the above questions, you have a pest problem, and not the kind to be solved by a trip to the hardware store. Pest problems are best left to licensed and qualified pest professionals.

?Pests, such as mice and insects, can transmit diseases and cause severe allergic reactions.

Inhaling fumes from dead mice or their droppings can cause headaches, fever, nausea and diarrhea. That?s why we strongly encourage people to call an expert at the first sign of a pest infestation,? says Missy Henriksen, vice president of public affairs for the National Pest Management Association.

However, weeding through the list of pest-control professionals can be a challenge. Some door-to-door pest experts will offer a free home inspection that leads to all sorts of costly treatments and lengthy procedures.

Henriksen offers the following tips on finding a trustworthy professional control agent:

Always deal with a qualified and licensed pest management company. Consider asking to see the license or other credentials of the pest control professional who comes to solve your pest problem.

Ask friends and neighbors to recommend pest control companies, and find out how satisfied they were with the service.

If large sums of money are required, get bids from several pest control companies to get the best deal.

Look into professionals that are members of national, state or local pest management associations like the NPMA.

Ask plenty of questions about the extent of your pest problem, how it?s to be treated and the work needed so there aren?t any unwelcome surprises on your bill.

Find out if the pest management company has liability insurance to cover any damages to your house or furnishings during the extermination process.

If your purchase comes with a guarantee, know explicitly what it covers, how long it lasts and whether any action is required to keep it in effect.

Get more information about pest management issues at www.pestworld.org ? including pest prevention, identifying an infestation and how to find a pest professional.
