Thomson family company names Binet to succeed Beattie as CEO

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Michael Jackson's father, Joe Jackson, has suffered a stroke but is OK and resting in a Las Vegas hospital, a family friend said on Thursday. "He was doing well and says he's feeling OK," close family friend Brian Oxman told Reuters. Oxman, Michael Jackson's one-time attorney, said the 83-year-old patriarch of the pop music family started experiencing weakness on Wednesday while walking in a park near his home and was later admitted to a hospital. Jackson has a history of strokes, Oxman said. "He was talking fine," Oxman added. "He sounded excellent to me." A former ...

Build a Sturdy Solar Oven for Efficient Cooking Outdoors and in Emergencies

Build a Sturdy Solar Oven for Efficient Cooking Outdoors and in EmergenciesA solar oven can be a lifesaver during a blackout or other emergency?or it can be a low-maintenance alternative to other outdoor cooking methods. While you can make a solar oven using just a cardboard box and tin foil, this version is a little more durable and efficient.

Popular Mechanic's DIY Solar Oven uses plywood, rigid foam insulation, a half-sheet of drywall, heavy-duty aluminum foil, and a glass lid. As such, it's more of a weekend project than a last-minute emergency solar oven. What you'll get in return for your efforts, however, is a strong solar oven you can be proud of that should cook more than a few meals and last you through many emergencies. With a 45? F degree outdoor temperature, the box should reach a 305? F degree temperature?enough to bake 6 scones in about 35 minutes.

Ecuador says WikiLeaks' Assange suffering lung problems

QUITO (Reuters) - WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is suffering from a chronic lung ailment that could worsen at any time and is being checked regularly by doctors, the Andean country's ambassador to Britain said on Wednesday.

Assange, 41, whose website angered the United States by releasing thousands of secret diplomatic cables, has been holed up inside Ecuador's embassy in London since June to avoid extradition to Sweden for questioning over rape and sexual assault allegations. Assange has denied any wrongdoing.

"He has a chronic lung complaint that could get worse any time. The Ecuadorean state is covering Mr Assange's medical costs and we have arranged for regular doctor visits to check on his health," Ambassador Ana Alban told a local TV network during a visit to Quito.

British authorities say Assange will be arrested if he sets foot outside the embassy. The building, located just behind London's famed Harrods department store, is under constant police surveillance.

Ecuador said last month it is worried about Assange's health and asked Britain to guarantee him safe passage to hospital from the embassy if he needs medical treatment.

That would allow him to return to the embassy after treatment with refugee status.

Assange took refuge in the embassy after running out of legal options to avoid being sent to Sweden. Ecuador granted him asylum in August and said it shared his fears that he could be sent from Sweden to the United States to face charges over WikiLeaks' activities.

U.S. and European government sources say the United States has issued no criminal charges against him, nor launched any attempts to extradite Assange.

Assange is said to be living a cramped life inside the modest diplomatic mission. He eats mostly take-out food and uses a treadmill to burn off energy and a vitamin D lamp to make up for the lack of sunlight.

On Tuesday, the Australian former computer hacker accused "hard-right" U.S. politicians of pressing European credit card firms to block more than $50 million in donations to WikiLeaks, and said that had forced the website to reduce the volume of documents it posted online.

Speaking to reporters in the embassy's gilt-corniced conference room, Assange said his stay there had been "difficult in many ways" and that any resolution of the standoff would be "a matter of diplomacy."

He refused to comment on his health or how long he may have to stay in the embassy, declaring those subjects "off-topic."

In late August, Assange said he expected to wait six months to a year for a deal that would allow him to leave the embassy.

Main Features

iPod touch
Engineered for maximum funness.

iPod touch features a 6-mm ultrathin design and brilliant, 4-inch Retina display. The 5-megapixel iSight camera lets you take stunning photos, even in panorama, or record 1080p video. Discover music, movies, and more from the iTunes Store, or browse apps and games from the App Store. And with iOS 6-the world's most advanced mobile operating system-you get Siri, iMessage, Facebook integration, FaceTime, Game Center, and more. Now that sounds fun.

Brilliant new design.

There's thin and light. Then there's thin and light on a whole new level. iPod touch now has a superthin aluminum body that feels barely in your hand or pocket. It comes in colors so fun, it's impossible to choose just one (but you'll have to). With brand new Apple EarPods, iPod touch sounds as good as it looks. And the iPod touch loop makes it all even more un-put-downable.

It's the thinnest, lightest iPod touch ever.

For the first time, iPod touch is made from the same kind of anodized aluminum used in the MacBook line. And it's made the same way too: By machining the enclosure from a single piece of aluminum. The first thing you'll notice about iPod touch is its barely-there weight. Then its supersmooth finish. Then all those Apple details - like the highly polished beveled edges. And iPod touch is made from one of the strongest grades of aluminum there is. Which means that it not only looks and feels incredible, it's tough enough to tag along on more than a few crazy nights out.

iPod touch doesn't just come in color. It's practically made of color.

There's a reason these iPod touch colors are so incredibly rich and vibrant. It's because they're bonded right to the aluminum - not just painted on the surface. So you see saturated color that still lets the luster of the metal shine through. Which gives you a material that shows off the color, and a color that shows off the material.

One hand still rules the screen.

The new Retina display got taller but not wider. That means everything you do on iPod touch can remain a one-handed operation, and your thumb gets more room to roam. The display is also more advanced, with finger-friendly Multi-Touch technology built into the glass instead of beneath it. So less gets between you and your games, music, messages - whatever you love to see and do.

Keep fun close at hand.

The iPod touch loop is a colorful new way to keep your iPod touch at the ready. That's perfect for when you want to shoot from a hard-to-reach camera angle. Flip iPod touch up to type a quick iMessage. Or just sport it when you're pocketless. The loop also keeps your iPod touch safe, so you don't have to worry about a slip, fumble, drop, or overzealous robot dance.

The loop is easy to attach and detach.

Just push the button on the back, slide the loop over it, give the loop a little tug, and you're good to go. The design is so streamlined, you won't even notice the button until you need it.

4-inch Retina display

iPod touch now has a bigger, 4-inch Retina display, so all your fun takes on a bigger size. Your hairpin car-racing turns, your dance party playlist, your favorite celeb gossip site - everything is sharp, vivid, and lifelike. And the new display is a perfect widescreen fit for your HD movies and TV shows because now you can watch them all without letterboxing.

New iSight camera

Some moments are just begging for a photo. Your best friend's bizarro look-alike spotted on the street. An entire wall of graffiti art. A surreal-looking sunset. The iSight camera on iPod touch packs 5 megapixels - seven times more than the previous generation ? and takes such great shots, you can ditch your point-and-shoot camera for good.

Advanced optics, tap to focus, an LED flash, and face detection help you get the shot every time. The iSight camera shoots 1080p HD video, and the front camera gets a boost for better FaceTime calls. And you can edit, crop, and enhance your photos right from iPod touch using the Photos app. For more editing options, try iPhoto or iMovie, available in the App Store.

Dual-core A5 chip.

It's the most powerful iPod touch ever. That's because the dual-core A5 chip provides up to twice the processing power and up to seven times faster graphics than the previous generation. So games are incredibly responsive and realistic. Your samurai swordplay is sharper than ever, your zombie-dodging ultrasmooth. And because the A5 chip isn't a power hog, you get the same great battery life: up to 40 hours of music or 8 hours of video on a single charge. So you can keep on swinging, slicing, and racing. And listening, watching, and browsing.

New features of iOS 6

iOS 6 is packed with over 200 new features to make things you do every day even easier. Facebook integration makes everything more Like-able. With Shared Photo Streams, you can share just the photos you want with just the people you choose. And Siri comes to iPod touch, ready to answer your questions about life, sushi, and last night's triple overtime.

  • Clarence Thomas grew up in a Gullah Geechee community southeast of Savannah?s city limits called Pin Point. Last year we explored the Gullah Geechee town of Pin Point which lies along the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor designated by the Alliance of National Heritage Areas. He has grown up and made our city proud as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court.
  • Ulysses Davis (1914-1990) made his living as a barber. His barbershop is one of the secret locations on the map we give you as a part of our Black History Month B&B Special. When business was slow at the barbershop, Ulysses made wood sculptures of 41 US Presidents, from George Washington to George H.W. Bush ? the last president Ulysses saw in his lifetime. Now, that?s using your time wisely!
  • W.W. Law was a civil rights leader from Savannah. He was a leading figure in the desegregation movement who used nonviolent resistance to bring great progress to the city. Poison pens and lipstick guns: 8 real-life spy weapons

South Korean authorities capture an assassin armed with deadly gadgets almost as implausible as this collection of espionage gear.

Newly crowned "Sexiest Man Alive" Kim Jong Un isn't the biggest fan of Park Sang-hak, an anti-Pyongyang defector now living in South Korea who's near the top of North Korea's hit list. The outspoken activist was recently the target of a would-be assassin equipped with three seemingly innocent, easy-to-conceal weapons plucked straight from a 007 script. A South Korea "investigation official," speaking with CNN, described the weapons thus: A poison-tipped device built to look like a Parker ballpoint pen; a second pen equipped to shoot poison-filled bullets directly into the skin; and a small flashlight rigged to fire three bullets at close range. "You'd notice a gun," said Park, "but these weapons are so innocuous [they could] easily kill someone [without warning]. I'd be dead immediately." Park is hardly the first to be the target of top-secret spy weaponry. Here, eight other imaginative killing devices that have actually been produced:?

1. Lipstick gun
Meet the "kiss of death." This famous Cold War-era pistol may look like an ordinary lipstick, but it was designed by KGB operatives to let a Soviet femme fatale fire a single 4.5mm bullet at anyone unlucky enough to get caught in her cross-hairs.?

2. Exploding rats
During World War II, Britain's Special Operations Executive (SOE) devised a clever plan to blow up enemy boilers by hiding explosive rat carcasses in German coal piles. Supposedly, an unsuspecting enemy would simply toss the dead rat into the nearby fire to dispose of the body and... kaboom! The plan went awry when German authorities seized the first consignment of the devices ? and went on to showcase them in the country's top military academies.

3. Flamethrower glove
Patrick Priebe, a cyberpunk weapons hobbyist, designed this hand-mounted flamethrower using just four lithium ion batteries, butane, a NE555 circuit board, and a transformer to spew fire right from his palm.?

4. Umbrella dart gun
Just one day before his 1978 death in London, Bulgarian dissident writer Georgi Markov felt a sharp prick in his thigh. He looked up to see a man clumsily fiddling with an umbrella before speeding off. The brolly had shot a dart loaded with a pellet of ricin, a sophisticated poison. The pellet was coated in a special wax designed to melt at body temperatures, releasing the ricin into the bloodstream. The shooter, believed to be a member of the Bulgarian secret police, was never caught.?

5. Exploding chocolate
Prime Minister Winston Churchill did not like the Nazis. And the Nazis did not like Prime Minister Winston Churchill, as evidenced by a letter written by a high-ranking World War II-era British intelligence officer, referencing a bizarre Nazi assassination plot to kill the boisterous politician with explosive chocolate. "We have received information that the enemy are using pound slabs of chocolate which are made of steel with a very thin cover of chocolate," wrote Lord Victor Rothschild of British intelligence. "Inside there is a high explosive and some form of delay mechanism." Fortunately, British spies discovered the candy bombs, which were to be placed around the War Cabinet's dining room, before anyone could have a taste.

6. Pistol glove
Another product of the Cold War-era KGB, this glove-cum-pistol be fired with the twitch of a finger. "It gave the wearer the ability to get within point blank range before firing a lethal shot," says Buck Sexton at The Blaze. "Oddjob would be proud."

7. Poisoned cigars
On August 16, 1960, a CIA official was handed a box of Fidel Castro's favorite cigars? along with instructions to rig them with a deadly poison. The cigars were treated with a toxin called botulinum, reportedly so potent it could kill any man who attempted to light one of the cigars. Though the cigars were duly doctored, it's unclear if they ever even made it into Castro's vicinity.?

8. CIA's heart-attack gun
During a mid-1970s Senate testimony, it was revealed that the CIA had developed a dart gun capable of causing a heart attack. The dart ? which could penetrate clothing, leave skin unmarked except for a small red bump resembling a mosquito bite, and then disintegrate ? was filled with a deadly shellfish toxin. The advantage, says InfoWars, was that officials would attribute the victim's death to natural causes in the event of an autopsy. It's unclear if the heart attack gun was actually ever used.?

Bonds, Clemens, Sosa on Hall ballot for first time

NEW YORK (AP) ? The most polarizing Hall of Fame debate since Pete Rose will now be decided by the baseball shrine's voters: Do Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens and Sammy Sosa belong in Cooperstown despite drug allegations that tainted their huge numbers?

In a monthlong election sure to become a referendum on the Steroids Era, the Hall ballot was released Wednesday, and Bonds, Clemens and Sosa are on it for the first time.

Bonds is the all-time home run champion with 762 and won a record seven MVP awards. Clemens took home a record seven Cy Young trophies and is ninth with 354 victories. Sosa ranks eighth on the homer chart with 609.

Yet for all their HRs, RBIs and Ws, the shadow of PEDs looms large.

"You could see for years that this particular ballot was going to be controversial and divisive to an unprecedented extent," Larry Stone of The Seattle Times wrote in an email. "My hope is that some clarity begins to emerge over the Hall of Fame status of those linked to performance-enhancing drugs. But I doubt it."

More than 600 longtime members of the Baseball Writers' Association of America will vote on the 37-player ballot. Candidates require 75 percent for induction, and the results will be announced Jan. 9.

Craig Biggio, Mike Piazza and Curt Schilling also are among the 24 first-time eligibles. Jack Morris, Jeff Bagwell and Tim Raines are the top holdover candidates.

If recent history is any indication, the odds are solidly stacked against Bonds, Clemens and Sosa. Mark McGwire and Rafael Palmeiro both posted Cooperstown-caliber stats, too, but drug clouds doomed them in Hall voting.

Some who favor Bonds and Clemens claim the bulk of their accomplishments came before baseball got wrapped up in drug scandals. They add that PED use was so prevalent in the 1980s, 1990s and early 2000s that it's unfair to exclude anyone because so many who-did-and-who-didn't questions remain.

Many fans on the other side say drug cheats ? suspected or otherwise ? should never be afforded the game's highest individual honor.

Either way, this election is baseball's newest hot button, generating the most fervent Hall arguments since Rose. The discussion about Rose was moot, however ? the game's career hits leader agreed to a lifetime ban in 1989 after an investigation concluded he bet on games while managing the Cincinnati Reds, and that barred him from the BBWAA ballot.

The BBWAA election rules allow voters to pick up to 10 candidates. As for criteria, this is the only instruction: "Voting shall be based upon the player's record, playing ability, integrity, sportsmanship, character, and contributions to the team(s) on which the player played."

That leaves a lot of room for interpretation.

"Everyone has their own way of dealing with the issue, and in the absence of hard and fast rules, there will continue to be a wide diversity of opinions," Stone said.

Clemens was acquitted this summer in federal court on six counts that he lied and obstructed Congress when he denied using performance-enhancing drugs.

Bonds was found guilty in 2011 by a federal court jury on one count of obstruction of justice, ruling he gave an evasive answer in 2003 to a grand jury looking into the distribution of illegal steroids. Bonds is appealing the verdict.

McGwire is 10th on the career home run list with 583, but has never received even 24 percent in his six Hall tries. Big Mac has admitted to using steroids and human growth hormone.

Palmeiro is among only four players with 500 homers and 3,000 hits, yet has gotten a high of just 12.6 percent in his two years on the ballot. He drew a 10-day suspension in 2005 after a positive test for PEDs, and said the result was due to a vitamin vial given to him by teammate Miguel Tejada.

Biggio topped the 3,000-hit mark ? which always has been considered an automatic credential for Cooperstown ? and spent his entire career with the Houston Astros.

"Hopefully, the writers feel strongly that they liked what they saw, and we'll see what happens," Biggio said last week.

Schilling was 216-146 and won three World Series championships, including his "bloody sock" performance for the Boston Red Sox in 2004.

The most recent case was of a dolphin found dead off the coast of Mississippi, its lower jaw missing.

Officials from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said Monday they're asking everyone from beachgoers to fishermen to wildlife agents to be on the lookout for injured or dead dolphins ? and any unusual interaction between the mammals and people.

"It's very sad to think that anyone could do that to any animal," said Erin Fougeres, a marine mammal scientist for NOAA's southeast office in St. Petersburg, Florida. "There have been some obviously intentional cases."

Fougeres said five dolphins have been found shot. In Louisiana, two were shot in 2011 and one in 2012. And in Mississippi, three were found shot this year, the most recent one last week, which was first reported by the Sun-Herald newspaper.

Besides the shootings, a dolphin in Alabama was found with a screwdriver stuck in its head over the summer. Another in Alabama had its tail cut off, and that animal survived. Still others were missing fins or had cuts to their bodies.

"I think it is outrageous," said Moby Solangi, the executive director of Institute for Marine Mammal Studies in Gulfport, Mississippi. "These animals are very docile, very friendly and they're very curious. They come close to the boats, so if you're out there, you'll see them riding the bows. And their curiosity and friendship brings them so close that they become targets and that's the unfortunate thing."

Dolphins are among the species protected by the 1972 Marine Mammal Protection Act. Violators can be fined up to $10,000 per violation and sent to prison for a year.

The California-based Animal Legal Defense Fund said it is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whomever harmed the dolphins.

Avoid early bird remorse: 10 Black Friday gadget do's and don'ts

14 hrs.

With many stores opening Thanksgiving evening, this year you won?t even have to digest your turkey before you put on your elbow pads and line up outside your favorite big box store. But to make body checking your fellow shoppers worthwhile, you?ll need a plan.?You don?t want to spend 12 hours wearing adult diapers to avoid losing a place in line, only to find out that the camera you snatched takes terrible pictures and costs $20 less on the Web.?

Don?t get early birds remorse! Use these tips make sure you really are getting a good deal on Black Friday gadgets.?

1. Do research online prices before you go out
On a normal day, retail stores charge a lot more for electronics than their online competitors. On Black Friday, you may find something that looks like a fantastic sale in the store, but is hardly less than the regular price you would have paid online.?

For example, Best Buy is selling a Windows 8 Professional upgrade disc for $54.99, but before you smash through the plate glass door, you should check and see that Microsoft?has been selling the ?same version of Windows 8 as online download for $40 for several weeks now. Target has a 6-foot HDMI cable on sale for $9.99, even though Newegg sells similar cables for $2.99 at any time of year.

2. Don?t leave the house for less than $200 in total savings
Let?s do some math to guestimate the cost of standing in line for the possibility, but not the certainty, of a bargain. Assume you will be spending a minimum of 5 hours on travel and waiting in lines for a single store, though for the good deals, you may need to wait in front of the store much longer. If you value your free time at even a low rate of $10 per hour, that?s $50 plus the cost of transportation to and from the store, which we?ll estimate at $4, the cost of one gallon of gas.

The worst part of this equation is that the $54 cost buys you a raffle ticket, where bargains are the prize, because even after spending that money, you could walk away empty handed. With stores often stocking less than a dozen units of their featured deals, there?s a very good chance that you won?t run fast enough or have good enough line position to get what you came for.

If you?re young and bored, maybe it?s worth gambling 5 hours of your life on the possibility that you?ll get a $400 TV for $180, but don?t do it if you?re going to save less than $200 in total on all purchases. When you have a family around, even that amount of savings might be too small and you might value your time at a higher rate. With my luck, I?d wait in line for 12 hours, the store would be out of TVs and my infant son would have taken his first steps while I was standing outside Best Buy. ?

3. Do use bargain aggregrators to find deals online
Shopping online is a much more civilized and time-efficient way to buy gifts and fill out your gadget collection this Black Friday. With dozens of sites, including those for the major brick and mortar retailers, offering sales and coupon codes, it?s easy to miss the best sales. Fortunately, there are a number of deal blogs that do nothing but find and report on the best prices.

My favorite deal aggregators include?LogicBuy,?Tech Bargains,?Ben?s Bargains?and?Fat Wallet. I usually check all four several times a day during the holiday season, just to see what?s for sale before it sells out.

4. Don?t buy an?outdated phone
Many retailers use Black Friday as an excuse to dump outdated products from their inventories. When it comes to phones, just say no, because last year?s mobile devices have slower CPUs, lower-res screens and, in the case of Android devices, often have old versions of the operating system.?

Take for example, the Samsung Galaxy S II that Radio Shack is giving away for free with a two-year contract on Sprint. Yes, free sounds like a good price, but this 2011-era phone feels ancient in comparison to the Galaxy S III which will be available for $50 on Sprint at the same store. ?Not only does the newer model have a sharp 720p screen and a faster processor, it also provides an NFC chip and custom software that lets you transfer files justby tapping phones.

Since you?ll own this phone for at least 20 months before you?re eligible to upgrade, you want a device that?s as current as possible. ?How dumb will you or your giftee feel in 2014 when everyone else is running Android 6 on 1080p screens while you?re stuck with a remnant from 2011?

5. Do buy hard drives, SSDs and other storage / memory upgrades
Whether you?re buying SD memory cards, more RAM, an external hard drive or an SSD upgrade, you can find some incredible deals online this Black Friday. We expect to see 128GB SSDs selling for $50 or less and 256GB models approaching the $100 mark. What better way to say ?I love you?than with an upgrade that doubles or triples the speed of your most important tasks?

You should also be able to find external USB back up drives hovering around $50 for 500GB and $85 for 1TB, maybe less. SD cards and microSD cards make great stocking stuffers and you?ll find 16GB versions of each for under $10 with 32GB capacities for well under $20. RAM is getting a lot cheaper these days so expect to pay $60 for 16GB of laptop memory and around $25 for 8GB. ?

6. Don?t buy a cheap notebook for people you like

Want to punish your teenager for posting inappropriate things to Facebook? Still have a grudge against mom for recycling your comic books? Get revenge by purchasing them low-end Black Friday notebooks that will ruin their computing experiences.?

For under $300, you can find such clunkers as this $179 Compaq door buster?from Walmart??that comes with a sluggish 1.3-GHz AMD C-60 processor, just 2GB of RAM and a low-res 15.6-inch screen. Put away your door busting pepper spray, because a computer like this will be bulky, slow and annoying, even though it can connect to the Internet and run basic apps.

If you?re shopping for a notebook for yourself or someone you actually like, accept nothing less than an Intel Core i3 CPU, 4GB of RAM and a speedy 7,200 rpm hard drive or SSD. Go for a 13 to 14-inch screen for maximum portability or, if you want a larger computer, look for one with a high-res screen (1600 x 900 and above) and good audio playback.

7. Do use coupon codes to configure your ideal laptop for less
Rather than buying the cheapest piece of junk notebook you see advertised, look for coupon codes for vendors that let you configure a notebook to your liking such as Dell, Lenovo, Toshiba and HP. With the appropriate price reduction, you can build just the ThinkPad or Inspiron you need and get a hefty chunk off the list price. Find the coupon codes on deal aggregation sites like Logicbuy and Techbargains.?

For example, with the right coupon codes, you can buy the awesome Lenovo ThinkPad T430s with a 1600 x 900 screen and discrete graphics for just $806.

8. Don?t even consider buying a cheap, low-end tablet?
What?s the point of buying a tablet if it can?t run your apps and the picture is such a low resolution that all the pixels are so big that they look like Ben-Day dots. So please for the love of Jobs or the admiration of Android avoid low-cost craplets like the Ematic eGlide EGL25BL that Walmart sells. With its 7-inch resistive touch screen and 1-GHz processor, this sad slate is likely to send you screaming back to your PC.

Even some Black Friday tablets from reputable brands are a rip-off, because they?re way out of date. Take, for example, the $179 Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7-inch that Best Buy is advertising. Yes, we gave the Galaxy Tab 2 7-inch a rating of 4 stars when we reviewed in back in April, but back then a 1024 x 600 display, a 1-GHz dual core CPU and Android 4.0 were fine specs.

Today, you can get the Google Nexus 7 with a quad-core CPU, an HD screen and the latest Android 4.2 OS for $199, well worth the $20 splurge.?

If you can possibly afford it, go for a 7-inch tablet with at least a 720p screen (1280 x 720) or a 9-?to 10-inch tablet slate with a resolution higher than 1080p (1920 x 1080).

9. Do buy accessories and peripherals, especially monitors
On Black Friday, we often see better deals on gadgets you attach to your computer than on the computer itself. So, if you?re planning to purchase a mouse, keyboard, Wi-Fi router or all-in-one printer, Black Friday could be a good time to act.?

Because you can never be too rich, too thin or have too many pixels, an external HD monitor makes a great gift or splurge for yourself. You can grab a 23-inch, 1080p screen for well under $150. This $110 23-inch Dell LED monitor is a great example.

10.?Don't make a major purchase you didn't plan for
That $279 10-inch tablet at Best Buy seems like a steal, but you didn't plan to buy a tablet for yourself this year. Stay away. The easiest way to blow your budget is to buy something you don't really need, just because it seems like a good deal. Make a list of major items you need before you look at the sales listings. Remember, the cheapest gadget is the one you didn't buy.

Nintendo's N64 could have had an embedded dial-up modem ...

Nintendo?s N64 console could have been one of the first video game consoles to be connected to the internet, featuring competitive multiplayer and an online store, a senior employee at Vidyo has revealed.

While working at another company fifteen years ago, Amnon Gavish, the Senior Vice President for Vertical Solutions at Vidyo, has explained how the Nintendo 64 could have had an embedded software dial-up modem and included a telephone jack on the console.

?I was part of a project that involved embedding a software dial up modem into the Nintendo N64 game console,? Gavish said. ?Nintendo is known for being THE innovator in the TV gaming field, and at that time they came up with the concept of head-to-head games and an online game shop, way before any of their competition.?

His account, published on the official Vidyo blog, also reveals just how careful and considerate Nintendo were about getting the N64 just right. Reading between the lines, some of it echoes the current product philosophy surrounding Apple at the moment.

?At one point during the N64 project, we sat in a design meeting and spent over an hour discussing such details as: where to place the telephone jack on the console, how long of a telephone cord would be required and what would happen if there was no telephone jack in the living room,? Gavish said. ?An hour-long discussion about a telephone cord?! I mention this now because that is the attention that Nintendo places on the smallest detail.?

Playing online with family, friends and complete strangers is an established part of video games now, but it?s actually a fairly new innovation for the industry when you consider its somewhat long and arduous history.

Xbox Live is seen by many to be the pinnacle of online gameplay, combining dedicated servers, cross-game chat and an intutitive interface. PCs aside, it?s the first system to make the experience fairly stress free.

Before Xbox Live, however, there was really only one hardware manufacturer interested in online gameplay; Sega. The Dreamcast was a curious beast, trying out very innovate ideas both in its hardware and first-party software. While it quickly gained critical success, it lost out in the console wars to the unstoppable Sony PlayStation.

Nintendo, meanwhile, seemed to show no interest whatsoever in online connectivity until the Nintendo GameCube. Who knew they were thinking about implementing it as far back as the Nintendo 64 though?

Vidyo has recently partnered with Nintendo to deliver its video calling technology in the WiiU. It?s an interesting development for the big N, who has typically focused on the gameplay experience and very little else. Additional functionality, including media and chat, has always felt like an afterthought on most of its home consoles.

Plenty of people are voicing concerns about the WiiU at the moment; is it powerful enough to compete with the next generation? Will enough third-party publishers support it? Is the online functionality capable enough?

While there is truth in some of those questions, the anecdote above should show that Nintendo isn?t doing any of this halfheartedly. They have a game plan with the WiiU. Perhaps we just don?t see it yet.

North Cyprus Law | Is Fraud a Criminal Offence in the TRNC?

North Cyprus Law | Is Fraud a Criminal Offence in the TRNC?Qu. What is the legal definition Fraud? Is Fraud also a Criminal Offence in the TRNC?

According to the Civil Wrong Law in the TRNC the definition of fraud is as follows;

??Fraud consists of a false representation of fact, made with the knowledge that it is false, or without belief in its truth or recklessly, careless whether it be true or false, with intent that it shall be acted upon by the person deceived:

Provided that no action shall be brought in respect of any such representation unless it was intended to and did deceive the plaintiff and he has acted upon it and he has thereby suffered damage:

Provided also that no action shall be brought in respect of any such representation as to the character, conduct, credit, ability, trade or dealings of any person in order to obtain him credit, money or goods unless such representation is in writing and signed by the defendant himself. ?

The Criminal Code of the TRNC defines some similar (but not exactly the same) actions like false pretence, cheating and forgery with a different wording and narrower elements than the civil act. In Criminal cases or Criminal Law you would realise that every situation would be dealt with under separate articles depending on its circumstances or how the offence was committed. At this point ? must add that the major difference in Criminal cases from Civil cases regarding this subject is that Criminal cases, where inter alia the Criminal code would be used, do not offer compensation etc to the complainant (deceived) and, if found guilty beyond reasonable doubt, the accused would be punished with a fine or imprisonment whereas in Civil cases, where inter alia the Civil Wrong Law would be used, the plaintiff (deceived) would gain compensation etc if he/she proves his case by the balance of probabilities, but the defendant wouldn?t be imprisoned unless he fails to comply with a court order.

As you can see from what I have written above fraud can be a criminal offence according to the criminal code of the TRNC but fraud in Criminal Law isn?t as general and is more specific. It would change from case to case in other words every case depends on its own merits. Therefore I can only say its a criminal offence if I know all the relevant facts of the case. Below I have put down a crime according to the Criminal Code of the TRNC which would interest most people.

??Any person who, being a seller or mortgagor of any property, or being the advocate or agent of any such seller or mortgagor, with intent to induce the purchaser or mortgagee to accept the title offered or produced to him, and with intent to defraud-

a) Conceals from the purchaser or mortgagee any instrument material to the title, or any incumbrance; or

b) Falsifies any false statement as to the title offered or may depend; or

c) Makes any false statement as to the title depends or conceals any fact material thereto,

is guilty of a misdemeanour, and is liable to imprisonment.??

Google Investing $75 Million Into New 50MW Wind Farm ...

?
Google is continuing to show its commitment to development of a renewable energy economy, investing $75 million dollars into a 50MW wind farm in Rippey, Iowa.

20121119-011250.jpg

Google has invested a ton into clean energy in recent years, benefiting from the financial savings gained by doing so as well as the good PR (while doing its best to ?do no evil?). In particular, it has put most of it?s money into wind and solar power projects.

?The Mountain View behemoth keeps writing checks, and the latest one is The $75 million dollar investment is for an undisclosed stake in a 50-megawatt wind farm that?s located about an hour from Des Moines,? TreeHugger?s Michael Graham Richard writes.

20121119-011255.jpg

?The Rippey wind project, which is currently operational, was developed by RPM Access and should generate enough energy to power over 15,000 homes. The turbines were made by Nordex USA at their Jonesboro facility in Arkansas.?

This latest investment now brings Google?s total investments in renewable energy up to $990 million. I wonder if there will be some ceremony of sorts when it hits $1 billion.
